Romulus my Father - a boy's memories | Romulus, My Father (2007)The story is based on a young boy's memories. The boy, Rai, is played by Kodi Smit-McPhee - and the performance is excellent. The setting is rural Victoria in the 1960s and the photography is remarkable. Rai's mother, Christina (Franka Potente), is somewhat neglectful, tends to be depressed and is often not there. So his father, Romulus (Eric Bana), is mostly a single parent and we learn much about the complexity of their relationship. Their lives have many hardships which makes the movie a bit bleak, but happier memories are interspersed and help to lighten it. | I loved many aspects of how rural Victoria is portayed. Two older ladies who give Rai cakes , and prepared a birthday cake for him are superb. This is a great film and I am sure I will watch it again. | Romulus, my Father - Rai and Romulus | |

Indian Temple near our KL hotel | Malaysia Part 3 - out and aboutJust outside our hotel in KL was an India temple that was usually a hive of activity from early morning till late. Sometimes there were bells, and ceremonies inside (repeated on TV monitors), and at other times food was being served outside. | | Next to the temple there were stalls selling accessories for worshippers as well as basic needs. And next to that is a restaurant that was busy all day and had good indian food quite cheaply. | Shop and Restaurant beside the Temple | Melaka Restaurant on Jonkers Walk | In Melaka, just off an area called Jonker's walk, we found this restaurant with live music. Hendra chats with Shirley, and in the background is Chris - another Aussie from Mackay in Qld.
| Another Melaka hangout was this Honky Tonk Cafe. It had a small balcony overlooking the river, and Joe "Fingers" - the NZ owner/manager (with his Malaysian wife) was adept on the piano and keyboard. Linda is watching Hendra and Joe.
