Bale Bengong with Curtains | Dressing the Bale BengongFinally we have added drapes with mosquito net across the top. By day you have some sun control, and by night a new sleeping spot. Here the 94% full moon is rising in the east at around 9pm. | | | | |

Morning Spa | Vonnie was the first house guest and brought life, humour and conversation (and also some Aussie gifts). Here she enjoys the jacuzzi at dawn.
| Sunrise, the same day, as seen on the beach. The fishing boats operate from nearby and go out many mornings and also some evenings with lights to get prawns.
| Fishing Boat at Sunrise | Kids at Hotsprings | Hendra's family came from Sulawesi to help launch the house. We took a group to the hotsprings nearby - and the kids all went in.
| | The adults mostly stayed dry, but enjoyed the atmosphere, and did some shopping. | Adults at Hotsprings | Family Relaxing | Back at the house they enjoyed the pools. | |

The villa as seen from the beach | The main house is complete
This photo shows the house but not the gardens since it is the house that is now all but complete - a few small jobs remain to be done. | Stairway This feature of the house got our attention from the beginning, and is one of the factors that made us choose this design.
| The stairway is a feature | Jacuzzi | JacuzziIt can be switched on at last and is very relaxing. The way the main pool spills over the top provides a visual connection with the Bali Sea. | The main bedroom The mosquito nets are still to come. The doors open to the dining terrace by the pool.
| The master bedroom
| Living room below the mezzanine
| Living Space Here is the sitting area with the TV or home cinema space behind.
| Another View The house as seen from the beach again. This one gives a clearer view of the upstairs space where we have Internet and Library. | Another view from the beach | |

Ploughing at Dawn | Here in Lovina, the dry season broke with rains at the end of January. The nearby farmers immediately started ploughing - the first pass roughly turns over the sods - then after a week or two they plough again, then finally after flooding the fields they use a levelling gadget to make fairly flat mud fields ready for planting. The work starts before sunrise and goes for maybe 4 hours. | | The preparation of the many plots goes on for about 6 weeks, but early on, seedbeds are prepared. Here you see seedling that have been growing for about 2 weeks. | Seedling beds | Team transplanting | Then in just a few days the entire area that has been prepared over 6 weeks is transplanted. Each worker in the team steps backwards through the mud planting about 6 rows that occupy about 1 metre of width. They work quickly - about 2 seedlings per second.
| | This year they seemed to work really hard to get it all done before the Nyepi (Balinese New Year) holidays. It reminded me how when we were kids on the farm, there was sometimes a rush to get the harvest done before Xmas day. | Transplanted and flooded | |

Bali Canon | Nyepi is the Balinese New Year. Like Chinese New Year it at the time of a new moon, but this year it is one month later than the Chinese New Year and is on March 19. In the weeks leading up to it there is plenty of noise from their "fireworks". They use lengths of bamboo to form small canons, have a fuel (I think its kerosene) in it and they warm it to get vapors. While warming it they keep a foot over the ignition hole which is on top near the base, then with a lighted taper they remove the foot ignite. | Click on this image for a video (with shaky camera) to give some idea of the sound - but you have to be there to really appreciate how loud it is. This action is all taking place on the side of the street we are currently living in, and you can here the explosions from many similar canons dotted around the villages. (The video is 16 Mb so you need a good connection.)

Guestrooms in week21 | The last time I counted weeks was week 14 in early January - now we are at week 21 - how time flies. Clearly, the early hope that it would be comleted in 16 weeks is an unrealized dream. Now we are hoping for a finish in Week 24 - but that could slip a bit. This coming week we expect the guest-rooms to be at lock-up stage so that we can get some deliveries to the site. The tiling in these rooms and the staff house is virtually comlete. The lighting is connected and working, and the windows and doors just need panels (mostly glass) for completion. The plumbing is still to be completed. | | The main house has the floors more than half done, but there is still a way to go. The mezzanine floor has been completed. The electrical work requires work, as does the plumbing. We plan our main Internet spot to be upstairs - so this photo shows the view that we will get as we browse the web - there will be a water feature in the foreground. | View from upstairs | Clearing for the garden | We have agreed on landscape plans and the yards are mostly cleared ready for the garden contractor to begin. Hendra is standing just in front of where the main water feature will be.
| The bale bengong which will be beside the pool above the machinery is taking shape here. TYhe roof sections are standing by and whould be on real soon. | Building the bale bengong | The empty kitchen | A few kilometres away in a furniture workshop, we saw the kitchen modules - so these should be brought on-site soon and will transform the currently empty kitchen space quickly. | |
