An article with the title Islam is bad for Toursim compares the relative successes of Bali, Lombok and the islands of Ternate and Tidore off Maluku.  They blame Islam for the poor showing  of Lombok Ternate and Tidore - but I would have thought that the International airport in Bali explains a lot.  Anyhow, read on ...

Hindus, Muslims work to keep a lid on tensions on a fabled island


Kuta, Bali – The Bali bombs of 2002 and 2005 confirmed local conventional wisdom: bad things on the island come from Java. The 2005 bombings not only revived the slump in tourism, which accounts for at least 40 percent of Bali’s economy, but exacerbated ancient animosities as well.

But while other parts of Indonesia have descended into savage violence, partly because of the discredited and deposed Suharto regime’s transmigration policy—the world’s largest resettlement project, which moved Javanese, Balinese, Madurese and others to outlying islands—Bali has remained mostly peaceful.

There are court processes proceeding at snail's pace, but not much action.  He is old, and the issues complex, so people may just be waiting for it all to go away.  Here is a Jakarta Post story.

Some criticize the Yudhoyono (SBY) government for lack of action on the anti-corruption front.  But there is some progress.  Last week a former minister from the Megawati governments was jailed for 6 years (though he is likely to appeal this)>  Details below as recounted in the Jakarta Post.
