Evan suffer blackouts during his childhood - usually associated with traumatic episodes.  He starts writing a journal which includes what he can remember just prior to a blackout.  He grows out of the blackouts, but remains fascinated with the memory.  Then he finds that re-reading his journals can not only reveal some blacked out memories, but enables him to change what happens - but this then changes the subsequent lives of all involved.  As the story unfolds we replay many scenes and the outcomes are usually not so good.
This movie kept my interest  all the way -- but it's not a great movie.  Apart from difficulty accepting the central idea, the direction is not great and the central performances are just OK.  The link between this story and "the butterfly effect" in chaos theory is fairly tenuous - see Wikipedia for more on the butterfly effect .  At times the movie is violent such as the scene depicted here.
