Baluran National Park in East Java

Seventy kilometres to the north east of our home (Bali Vnew) in Lovina -across the Bali Sea - you reach the east coast of Java where there is the 25,000 hectare Baluran National Park. The volcanic mountain - Mt Baluran - within gives its name to the park.

Bama is a beach where there is accommodation, and a few kilometres inland is Bekol with more accommodation.  This shows the cottage at Bama where we stayed.  It has the beach in front and a waterhole behind that attracts the fauna.

Here we are looking south down the beach.  Bali is not far away to the left- but is not visible at this time.
From the porch at the back of our cattage we could see deer coming to drink at the waterhole.  Some played around while others stood watch.  They were not so close so my camera could only catch a glimpse.

We did not get to see buffaloes, but this photo from the web shows them.  Much of the park is savanah type vegetation and it becomes quite arid in the dry season.
There are large monkey coloneis and they ask us not to feed them.  At low tide the forage on the beach for crabs.  Apparently they use their long tails to catch the crabs.

As we drove in before sunset, and took another drive after sunset, we saw these greem peafowl.  We never got a chance to photograph them - but other more patient photographers have.  Here is a shot by Mark Thibault of a female.
On another webiste I found this photo of a male - also photographced at Baluran.  They are found in a number of places in south-east Asia - but Baluran features as one of the main sites.  If you Google for "green peafowl" you will find plenty of informatin.

Baluran - minister's helipad

On the road near Bekol, a smalls section is concreted and has a white "H" for helipad. This photo shows it with the volvanic peak of Mt Baluran behind.  This was done for a minister's visit - and then apparently after all this preparation he only stayed a short time.
The Google Earth view of this area does not show the helipad - suggesting that the GE photo is a few years old - and the helipad newer.   In the GE view you can see some Bekol buildings at top left, and the helipad is on the road just as it gets clear of the nearby trees.
